Destination wedding photography and engagement photo sessions are some of the most exciting parts of the work that I do, and my recent session with Stacey and Eddie reminded me of that. While their Denver engagement photos weren’t all that far of a distance away, per se, I enjoyed getting to work with them as an urban engagement photographer as we captured their engagement photos back in the fall.

Our session took place on a beautiful fall day with the most perfect late afternoon golden sunlight. Stacey looked absolutely radiant in a flowing, off white gown that was simply gorgeous for the photo session. She truly evoked the glamour of a vintage-era screen goddess, and the contrast of her gown with the rich terracotta tones of the historic buildings in the park was seriously on point.

I think this photo session reminded me of the fun of being a destination wedding photographer because of the way the rich architectural details of the buildings in City Park provided such a beautiful contrast in these photos. Many of my clients enjoy outdoor Colorado wedding and engagement photos that incorporate our rugged, beautiful scenery. Stacey and Eddie’s choice of City Park brought some of the area’s rich history and iconic architecture into their photo session with some seriously stunning results. Their unique engagement photo session totally matched their fun and playful personalities. They were completely natural in front of the camera, and it was so much fun to capture images that reflected their joy at being with one another! This fun-loving and romantic couple has planned a fall wedding at the Sonnenalp in Vail, Colorado, and I’m excited to see what this new chapter of their lives holds. Is this the sweetest, most playful couple, or what?! Nichole and Ben wanted a photo session that captured who they are as a couple, and I’m so excited to share it here today. Their Sandstone Ranch engagement photos marked my first time at this scenic location, and it’s one that I’m happy to add to my list of go-to places for photos with individuals, couples, and families.

Colorado weddings and engagement sessions are all so very different, depending on the personality of the couple and the unique attributes of the scenery they’ve chosen. This couple has a very playful vibe together. I knew it was going to be a great session when firefighter Ben picked Nichole up for some super fun shots early in our time together! That set the tone right away. Their delight in each other really shines through in the photos – they just enjoy each other’s company, it’s clear to see.

As a Longmont engagement photographer, people might think I’m looking for a bright and sunny day for photos to be their best. Strangely enough, it’s actually the gray and overcast days like this one that are the easiest for getting incredible photos. Clouds help filter the light so there aren’t any shadows to work around.

I loved working with them at Sandstone Ranch! The location boasts a lake surrounded by tall grasses, and it makes an incredible backdrop for photos of all kinds.

And let’s not forget that barn! The photos near the old wood barn are some of my favorites. There’s just something about the age and endurance of that aged barn that speaks of the way love unfolds and grows stronger over time, even while getting weathered along the way.

Nichole and Ben are planning for an early fall wedding at Lionscrest Manor in Lyons, and I know it’s going to be a beautiful Colorado wedding! I have a confession to make. In my work as a Colorado family photographer, there’s one thing I enjoy more than photographing a moment in a family’s life…

…and it’s having the privilege of following a family over the years through multiple kinds of photography sessions!

It’s such a joy to see people go through engagement and wedding photos, then newborn photos and family photos as kids are born and grow. I think it’s one of the reasons I prefer to take natural family portraits. Working outside lets me capture each person’s unique personality and the fun dynamics among all the members of a family, whether it be between spouses or parent and child, or among siblings.

When the Perry family wanted me to be their Colorado family photographer in honor of their daughter’s first birthday, I couldn’t resist. I’ve known them for the past 10 years, and during that time, I’ve had the pleasure of photographing Andrew and Leslie for their engagement, their wedding, and then as their beautiful children have come along. And as a bonus, fall family photos are some of the best when it comes to lighting, textures, and colors – they’re irresistible! I couldn’t wait for our session, and the results were worth it.

What a perfect fall day it was for Boulder family photos. The lighting was glorious and soft, yet the weather was unseasonably warm and so totally comfortable for just having fun (and letting me capture the joy their family obviously experiences together) in our outdoor photography session.

Capturing a moment in time…that’s what it’s all about when I get to photograph a family. In this moment, sweet 1-year old Louisa has just gotten in a couple of bottom teeth, taking a tiny step toward the world of childhood and away from the preciousness of the baby years. Her big brother Archer is 3, looking every bit the little man as he protects his little sister and loves her so well.

The glorious Boulder, Colorado area was in fine form – these mountain family photos showcase such a stunning backdrop that shows off this family’s playful spirit and abundant love for each other. Thanks, Perry family, for the opportunity to spend this time with you in such a lush setting!

MORRISON COLORADO ENGAGEMENT PHOTOGRAPHY

What fun it was to spend time with McKenna and Armon as they allowed me the honor of capturing their Morrison Colorado engagement photos recently! These high school sweethearts have been together for nearly a decade…10 years! I loved every minute I spent with them, photographing the uniqueness of their relationship.

For their fall engagement session, McKenna and Armon chose Lair O’ the Bear Park in Morrison, Colorado. Engagement photography sessions are one of my favorite kinds of photo sessions, because they reflect who each person is as an individual, as well as giving a peek into the possibilities the future holds for them as a couple. Looking at the sense of adventure and fun this lovely couple showed during the session, I’m thinking the future looks bright for McKenna and Armon!

The setting they chose for their Morrison Colorado engagement photos, was magnificent and it was such a joy to see their fun-loving sides come out amid the beauty of this majestic setting. The fall foliage was a lush mixture of greens, yellows, and golden tans, while the soft autumn lighting was the perfect romantic touch to the beautiful moments we captured that day. Nature’s color palette complemented the colors McKenna chose so well! Both of the gowns she wore for her session were like radiant jewels amid the vibrant hues and luscious textures the setting provided so abundantly for the session.

Their choice to contrast the rustic setting with formal attire is definitely a way their engagement photos stand out! Their adventurous side shone, and I especially loved McKenna’s intrepid spirit as she kicked off her heels and rock hopped out to a boulder in the stream for the PERFECT shot!

I love to help couples find ways to be authentic during their engagement sessions! Choosing a look that plays a little with expectations people might have, given the setting, is a great way that couples can make their engagement photos memorable for themselves as well as for their loved ones who see them.

McKenna and Armon were delightful to photograph for their engagement session. Best wishes to you two as you embark on what’s sure to be a bright future together!

OUTDOOR FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY

I can’t stop smiling after a recent outdoor family photography session in Boulder, Colorado. It was my pleasure to photograph Ben and Christi, along with their captivating, nearly 1-year-old son, Henry. This beautiful family chose the breathtaking site of Wonderland Lake as the setting for their outdoor family photography session, and it was magical indeed.

This Boulder family photography session gave all three a chance to indulge in some rest and relaxation, not to mention some serious fun. While I always enjoy outdoor family photography sessions, there was just something special about this sweet family and the natural ways they interacted with each other. These are the sessions I love most, when I just get to witness and photograph the members being themselves, whether silly or serious or anything in between.

Our time together ranged from playful to poignant – Ben and Christi clearly love spending quality time with their sweet son Henry! I knew I had captured an incredible image right away when I photographed Ben lifting Henry up at just the perfect moment. Henry was giggling with the fun of the quick movement, while the look of love Ben had for his son was something I’ll never forget. That was the moment that set the tone for the rest of the session, and it was awe inspiring.

The glassy water of Wonderland Lake was truly wondrous as a backdrop to highlight this family’s affection and joy at being together. The majestic mountains soared behind, their strength and permanence testifying to the enduring love this family shares. The verdant greens of the park were the perfect complement to the life and beauty that just radiates from the three of them.

While it’s obvious the entire family loves each other deeply, there really is nothing like the love between a mother and a son. It was my pleasure to witness and photograph the range of feelings between Christi and Henry. Her tenderness, delight, and deep love for Henry were written across her face in every photograph captured during the session.

I hope you enjoy these outdoor family portraits just as much as I enjoyed taking them. Thanks, Ben, Christi, and sweet Henry for the fun of spending this time with you. It’s my joy to share these images – I know they’ll bring the kind of smile that lingers for days to your face, too!
